Seed treatment & applied technologies

GAINING UNDERSTANDING ON THE BENEFITS AND THE REGISTRATION RULES

In an ever-evolving market, is important to have a clearer understanding on their features, benefits and registration rules, as well as country-by-country regulations on the movement of treated seed.

With an increase in seed trade and movement of treated seed amongst countries in the Americas and globally, there is a need to provide answers to frequently asked questions regarding whether or not a seed with a certain seed treatment or seed applied technology can be moved. This session looks to provide what seed industry and regulatory agencies in the Americas may need to know regarding the flow of treated seeds. It also looks for a clearer view on how the newest seed applied technologies bring benefits to farmers and the environment. We expect this session will contribute to a clearer path forward for the flow of treated seed across countries in a sustainable manner.

Biotechnology

DYNAMICS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

The scientific advancement of molecular markers several decades ago up to synthetic biology nowadays and its impacts is key topic of this session. These scientific developments strongly impact plant breeding innovation at the commercial level. Regulatory frameworks are always developed after these plant breeding methods have been released, consequently delaying the access to these tools and its benefits or causing obsolescence before being available. SAA together with other international seed associations is working hard globally in order to support a regulatory scenario that hinges on science and allows plant breeding developments to benefit all stakeholders, from the end user up to industry. This session will address the importance of having consistent criteria among countries when determining the scope of regulatory oversight for plants developed using the latest tools and the impact on the seed sector, consumers, farmers, traders and academic institutions. The importance of communicating the benefits of these methods to consumers and farmers will be part of the conversation.

Seed Phytosanitary Issues

HOW TO FACILITATE SEED TRADE IN THE AMERICAS?

Discover about the progress being made to resolve phytosanitary barriers of the movement of seed among the SAA countries and identify additional issues the Association needs to address. We will spotlight industry efforts to generate scientific information to support National Plant Protection Organizations in the Pest Risk Analysis (PRA) process and evaluate the contribution of this objective to the recent adoption of the International Standard on Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) for seed movement by the IPPC.

Intellectual Property & Plant Breeders Rights

REGULATORY FRAMEWORKS AND ENFORCEMENT TOOLS

Plant varieties and plant biotechnology inventions can be protected by plant breeders rights and patents. Effective intellectual property protection on such developments, however, is a challenge, as the technology is by nature self-replicating. The session on IP will be an up-to-date forum to explore and learn about IP regulatory frameworks in the region, coexistence of rights and enforcement tools for plant breeding innovations in this cutting-edge technology field. The agenda will also address the use of molecular markers for variety identification and differentiation, as well as the international system for cooperation on varieties registrations, two current topics in UPOV agenda.
