Seed World LATAM: A Regional Voice for the Future of Seeds in Latin America

The first 2024 edition of Seed World LATAM features Marlene Ortiz, Regulatory Affairs Manager of the Mexican Seed Association (AMSAC), on its cover. Ortiz is noted for her leadership in regulatory advocacy from a scientific perspective within the Mexican seed industry, underlining the importance of having leaders who understand both the science and the policies needed to drive the sector forward.

This edition addresses key issues for the seed industry in Latin America, including:

  • Lessons learned from the debate on UPOV 91 in Argentina: The process and conclusions derived from the discussion on Argentina’s accession to the UPOV 91 convention are analyzed, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for the protection of new plant varieties in the region.
  • Uruguay and gene editing: The new decree in Uruguay approving gene editing is presented, exploring its implications for innovation and agricultural development in the country and the region.
  • Interview with a plant breeding legend: An in-depth conversation with a leading plant breeder, sharing experiences and perspectives on the future of plant breeding.
  • The fight against fake news in agriculture: Strategies to combat misinformation in the agricultural sector are discussed, emphasizing the need for effective and evidence-based communication.

SAA has partnered with Seed World Group to launch Seed World LATAM, with the aim of promoting the development, commercialization and free circulation of seeds throughout the region, as well as advocating for science-based legislation and regulatory frameworks. This collaboration seeks to provide a platform for the dissemination and discussion of priority issues in the seed sector from a Latin American perspective.

The magazine invites national seed associations, companies, institutions and universities in the Americas to contribute original articles, studies or research for future editions. Those interested can contact us at info@saaseed.org.
